As a longtime MAC fan, I was thrilled to get my hands on this much-hyped translucent setting powder. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been putting it to the test in various makeup looks and environments. I’m excited to share my honest thoughts with you all!

I love the included velvety puff applicator – it nestles in its own compartment on top of a protective mesh screen. This mesh acts like a sifter to dispense the perfect amount of product and prevent messes. Genius!
The jar contains 0.42 oz / 12 g of finely milled, translucent loose powder. MAC describes it as a “weightless, mega-blurring finishing powder that sets, perfects and extends the wear of makeup.” The key claims are:

Application & Texture
The first thing I noticed was how incredibly soft and silky the powder felt. It’s so finely milled that it almost seems to melt into the skin. I experimented applying it both with the included puff and my go-to fluffy powder brush.
The puff worked well for more targeted application, like setting under eye concealer or doing an intense bake. However, I preferred using a brush for an all-over dusting to set my foundation. Either way, a little goes a long way with this product! The mesh screen prevents you from picking up too much and keeps application mess-free.
Blending was a breeze thanks to the powder’s lightweight texture. It sat smoothly on top of various foundations and concealers without looking heavy or cakey. Major points there!
Blurring Effects & Finish
Here’s where this powder really shines (or should I say, mattes?). The blurring claims are 100% legit. With just a light layer, my pores and fine lines practically vanished. It gave my skin an airbrushed, filtered effect that looked amazing both in person and in photos.
The finish is truly weightless and natural. It mattes down any unwanted shine without leaving you looking dry or flat. I was left with a soft focus, your-skin-but-better radiance. Think: real skin texture, but professionally retouched.
If you have oily skin like me, you’ll appreciate how well this controls shine throughout the day. I found myself reaching for blotting papers way less often when I set with this powder. Even in hot, humid weather, my T-zone stayed relatively matte and fresh-looking.
Wear Time & Oil Control
Speaking of long days, let’s talk about wear time. MAC claims this powder “extends the wear of makeup” and I’d say that holds true! On average, I got an extra 3-4 hours out of my foundation when I set with the Studio Fix powder vs. without it.
It also held up beautifully through sweat, humidity, and my oily T-zone’s best efforts to break it down. After 8+ hour days, my concealer was still creaseless and my foundation intact. I did notice a bit of fading on my nose and chin, but nothing a quick touch-up couldn’t fix.
For my oily skin, this powder is a game-changer for extending the life of my makeup. I imagine it would work beautifully for combo and normal skin types too. If you’re on the drier side, you may want to use a light hand and focus application on your T-zone.
Flash Photography Test
No review is complete without the dreaded flash photo test! Some translucent powders can be prone to flashback, leaving you with a ghostly white cast in pictures. I’m happy to report that the Studio Fix powder passed with flying colors.
I used a generous amount to set my under eyes and T-zone, then took several flash selfies in dim lighting. No white cast in sight! My skin still looked like skin, just perfectly mattified and filtered. Feel free to go ham with this powder before a big event or photo op.
Comparing to Other Popular Powders
If you’re wondering how this compares to other cult favorite translucent powders, I’ve got you covered. I’d say the MAC Studio Fix powder is most comparable to the Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. They have a very similar silky texture, blurring effect, and natural matte finish.
Compared to the LM powder, I found that the MAC powder controlled oil a bit better throughout the day. It’s also slightly more mattifying, while the LM powder is a touch more radiant. Both are beautiful options, but I’d give MAC the edge for oily skin.
Another popular option is the BY TERRY Hyaluronic Hydra-Powder. That one is more moisturizing and radiance-boosting, while the MAC powder is all about that soft matte filter. Choose based on your skin type and desired finish.
Is It Worth The Hype? My Final Thoughts
After putting this powder through its paces, I can confidently say YES, it lives up to the hype! The blurring effect is truly impressive, the wear time is fantastic, and the finish is so natural and skin-like. It’s everything I want in a setting powder and more.
If you’re on the hunt for a weightless, pore-perfecting powder that will keep you matte and flawless all day – look no further. I think this product would work well for most skin types, but it’s an absolute must-have for my oily-skinned girls.
The only minor downside is the price tag. At $39, it’s definitely a luxury product. However, you get a generous amount of product and a little goes such a long way. I can see this lasting me 6+ months with daily use. For me, the airbrushed finish and extended wear time are worth the splurge.
