As a makeup lover and beauty blogger, few products excite me more than a new foundation launch from MAC Cosmetics. Their iconic Studio Fix Fluid has been a staple in my collection for years, known for its full coverage, matte finish and impressive lasting power. So when MAC announced they were releasing an updated formula, the Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 24HR Matte Foundation + Oil Control, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and share my thoughts.
However, as I dug into the initial customer reviews flooding in, my excitement quickly turned to concern. A clear pattern emerged – an overwhelming majority of loyal, long-time Studio Fix Fluid users were deeply unhappy with the reformulation. As someone who has relied on this foundation for over a decade myself, I knew I needed to investigate further and share an honest, detailed review for my readers. So let’s dive in!
The Disappointment is Real
I have to start by acknowledging the elephant in the room – MAC has some seriously disappointed customers on their hands. Review after review laments the same key issues:
- The new formula doesn’t compare to the original. Customers who have used Studio Fix Fluid for 10, 15, even 20+ years almost unanimously agree that the reformulation is a major step down in quality. From the texture to the coverage to the lasting power, loyal users feel let down.
- The shades are inconsistent. Another prevalent complaint is that MAC seems to have changed more than just the formula. Multiple reviews note that their ride-or-die Studio Fix shade suddenly looks different in the new version – too yellow, too orange, too light or dark. For a product known for its inclusive shade range, this is a big problem.
- It’s not playing well with people’s skin. Perhaps most concerning are the many reports of the new formula causing issues like dryness, oiliness, caking, separation, accentuated fine lines and even breakouts. Yikes. Something about the updated ingredients just isn’t agreeing with a lot of people’s skin.
The disappointment and frustration in these reviews is palpable. There’s a sense of betrayal almost, from customers who feel MAC has carelessly messed with a holy grail product. As one reviewer passionately pleaded, “MAC I am very disappointed in this decision. We need the old formula back, period.”
But Wait, There’s a Silver Lining
That said, the feedback isn’t all bad. A handful of reviews rave about the new formula, calling out positive changes like:
- Pump packaging (finally!)
- More skincare benefits
- Smoothness and blendability
- Natural, skin-like finish
For some, the reformulation seems to be an upgrade, providing a “flawless” look and working even better for their skin type. As one happy customer shared, “Just want to say I love this new formula, my face looks flawless! Not sure why everyone else hates it so much, but its great for me.”
So while the negative reviews certainly outweigh the positive, it’s worth noting that the new Studio Fix Fluid formula may actually be an improvement for some. As with all base products, what works for one person’s skin won’t necessarily work for another’s.
Let’s Talk Packaging & Price
Can we take a moment to celebrate the new pump bottle? MAC loyalists have been begging for this change for years, and it’s nice to finally see it implemented, even if it took a whole reformulation to get there. The sleek, glossy black pump looks luxe and makes dispensing the perfect amount of product a breeze. Big win.
Sadly, the packaging upgrade came with a price hike. Several reviewers bemoaned the new higher cost, especially when the actual product seems to have gone down in quality for most. The price increase definitely stings.
The Ingredient Controversy
MAC says the new Studio Fix Fluid formula contains “16-hour wear extenders” and “soft-focus smoothing powders” to control shine all day. However, the standout addition is an infusion of skincare ingredients like moisturizing hyaluronic acid, protective antioxidants, and emollients like glycerin.
Interestingly, this skincare boost seems to be one of the most divisive changes. Some reviewers with dry skin appreciate the extra hydration, noting the foundation looks smoother and more natural. But for oily and combo skin, the added moisture is a major problem, leading to complaints of sliding, separation, shininess and shortened wear time.
There’s also a new fragrance that several sensitive reviewers had reactions to, and at least one concerning callout of BHT, a chemical some consider potentially harmful. Overall, it’s clear MAC messed with the core ingredients their Studio Fix fanbase knew and loved, and not everyone is happy about it.
To Buy Or Not To Buy?
Honestly, it’s hard for me to give a definitive recommendation on the new Studio Fix Fluid formula based on the reviews alone. The feedback is just so mixed and polarizing. I think it really comes down to your individual skin type and preferences.
If you’re a ride-or-die Studio Fix Fluid fan, especially with oily skin, I’d suggest proceeding with caution. Maybe buy the mini size first, or better yet, get a sample from a MAC store or counter to test before committing. There’s a high probability the new formula will be noticeably different than what you’re used to.
On the other hand, if you’ve never tried Studio Fix Fluid before, the new formula might be a great match for you, particularly if your skin is on the normal to dry side. The skincare infusion and pump packaging are appealing upgrades. Though again, I always recommend sampling first if you can.
The Bottom Line
Change is hard, especially when it comes to beloved holy grail products. While I commend MAC for trying to innovate on a classic formula, it’s clear they’ve missed the mark for a majority of their loyal Studio Fix Fluid fanbase.
The outpouring of passionate, heartbroken feedback from longtime users can’t be ignored – MAC needs to listen up and consider bringing back the original formula, even if it means offering it alongside the new version. Losing the trust and business of ride-or-die customers is never a good move.
At the same time, I don’t think the new Studio Fix Fluid formula is an automatic skip for everyone. The positive reviews, though fewer in number, suggest it could still be a hit for some. As always, base products are YMMV and the only way to know for sure is to test it yourself.
